I do not even know how to begin to express my gratitude for such a generous gift. The past couple of years of my life have been extremely difficult with the loss of both my father and my boyfriend of 8 years. The thought of becoming a nurse sparked my interest not long after I lost my father, but the loss of my boyfriend has molded this amazing career into my passion. Having watched the struggles of someone with cancer and someone with mental illness drives me everyday to make a difference in someone else’s life facing similar challenges. Although there was not a doubt in my mind I would get through school and accomplish my goal, my life experiences have taken a toll. A financial toll on my family from the loss of a two-income family to a single, and that if the emotional toll, just trying to surive a day without breaking down. Although I am still working, the Audrey’s Place Scholarship has taken the pressure off my financial situation, allowing me to focus more of my energy on school and my goals rather than the stress of wondering how I will manage to pay the next round of tuition. Not only has it helped relieve the financial strain, but more importantly it has allowed me room to grieve and sort through my emotions in a way I would not have been able to with worrying about working and finances. In doing so it has also allowed me to put more emphasis and focus on my personal goal of working to fundraise myself in my boyfriends honor, helping another recieve financial support for recovering from addiction. After this past year and my experience in the different placements my program offers I have come to realize my place in nursing belongs in that community. I am excited for what is to come and the opportunities I have ahead in being able to help others in the face of illness and even potentially change certain aspects of the health care system that seem to be failing our society.
